Overview
Join us and special guest speaker A.J. Lowik for this special event. This was originally scheduled to coincide with the in the lead up to International Trans Day of Visibility 2020 but the date was delayed due to the pandemic. Diversity Circles believes that this area of work is important at all times of the year!
This will be an interactive workshop, where participants will be asked to reflect on a few fictionalized, problem-based case scenarios, designed to help you think about the barriers and obstacles trans people face in accessing reproductive health care. The workshop will focus on identifying the barriers, as well as strategizing solutions to mitigate those barriers.

Guest Speaker
A.J. Lowik is a SSHRC-funded PhD Candidate with the Institute for Gender, Race, Sexuality and Social Justice at the University of British Columbia. Their PhD dissertation is entitled “Gendered and Reproductive Becomings: Trans People, Reproductive Experiences and the B.C. health care system.” It explores trans people’s reproductive decision-making processes, and how the B.C. health care system acts as a centre of calculation where knowledges are circulated regarding trans reproduction.
A.J. completed an HBA in Sociology and Sexual Diversity Studies at the University of Toronto, and a Masters degree in Sociology at York University. Their Masters research identified access issues for trans people in abortion service settings, and A.J. has since authored a manual for La Fédération du Québec pour le planning des naissances on operationalizing trans-inclusivity in abortion settings.
A.J. has authored and co-authored articles in the Journal of GLBT Family Studies, Scholarly Research and Communication and the African Journal of Reproductive Health. They authored a book chapter on trans breastfeeding practices in the collection Essential Breakthroughs: Conversations about Men, Mothers and Mothering. They helped create the Promoting Trans Literacies workshop series at UBC, and facilitated workshops with the Department of Sociology, CiUT’s Babe Waves, the GRSJ, the Faculty of Social Work, the Fword Conference, JumpStart and the Coordinated Arts Program.
